How to Spot a Husky

Huskies and malamutes are often mistaken for one another. Similar to the malamute, the husky is believed to be one of the oldest domesticated dog breeds. It was bred to be a sled puller, but generally did shorter, faster runs than the malamute. Huskies tend to be very comfortable around people, but are stubborn and pack-oriented. Therefore, if an owner does not clearly establish him/herself as the “pack leader,” a husky is not likely to obey commands. Huskies are notorious for digging holes and literally running away from their owners, and any out of control pet is more likely to attack another person or animal.

It is always an owner’s responsibility to train and restrain his or her pet. If you or someone you love has been the victim of a husky attack, you may be entitled to compensation from the animal’s owner. Characteristics of a Husky

Knowing what a husky looks like may help you stay alert and aware should you encounter one of these dogs unexpectedly. If you see a dog with the following characteristics, do not approach it and act with caution:

  • Wolf-like appearance (but with a smaller frame than the malamute)
  • Long, thick fur in a mix of grays, black, white, and sometimes brown
  • Blue or brown eyes; sometimes huskies will have one eye of each color
  • A straight, wispy tail
  • Pointed ears
