Pit Bulls

Pit bulls are the name used commonly to talk about the American pit bull terrier, but often is used to describe the American Staffordshire terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, American bulldog, and combinations of these breeds. It is well known that pit bulls, along with Rottweilers, make up the majority of dog bite cases each year in the United States. This can be traced back to the history of pit bulls and how they were bred.

The name “bulldog” was seen as far back as 1631, and was used in reference to dogs that were trained to fight bulls in the medieval sport of “bullbaiting”, which was outlawed in England in 1835. By the 19th century, dogs used in bull fighting and dog fights were known for their muscular build and incredible jaw strength. This selective breeding for vicious sports is the origin of the pit bull types known today.

Characteristics of Pit Bull Attacks

Pit bulls have several characteristics which were developed over time through selective breeding which make them particularly dangerous. Three of these common characteristics of pit bull attacks are:

  • Surprise Attack –In many instances, pit bulls do not display warnings prior to attack
  • “Hold and Shake” – Pit bulls use their jaw strength to clamp down on victims and shake them, which can result in terrible injury or death
  • Gameness – Pit bulls are genetically inclined to finish a fight

Looking at these characteristics, it is easy to see why so many of the worst dog biting incidents each year involve pit bulls.
