Chimpanzee attack victim receives face transplant

Posted on August 19th, 2011 No Comments

In 2009, a woman visiting her friend was ferociously attacked and mauled by her friend’s pet chimpanzee. The woman survived, but the attack left her with no eyes, nose, lips, or hands.

The victim underwent a 20-hour procedure with a surgical team of thirty to receive a face transplant as well as two hand transplants. According to doctors, the woman developed pneumonia during recovery, causing both hand transplants to fail. However, she has responded well to the face transplant and is showing signs of similarity to the way she looked before the brutal attack.

Amazingly, the woman can now eat and breath on her own. She intends to attempt hand transplants again.
