Lansing City Council Committee discusses dog ordinances

Posted on March 26th, 2013 No Comments

Lansing City Council’s committee on public safety denied that it is instituting regulations that are biased against certain dog breeds allegedly more prone to violence, saying that they are far from writing or instituting such laws. Committee Chairwoman Jody Washington said that reports stating the committee was planning on creating such rules were nothing but made-up rumors.

Lansing-based animal rescue Voiceless-MI foster care coordinator Beth Contreras said any new ordinance should target owner competence and animal behavior rather than breed specification. She made this statement based on the fact that the tendency to bite is controlled by the dog’s upbringing, and is more prominent in unneutered dogs and those who are frequently on a leash or chain.

Ingham County Animal Control Director Jamie McAloon Lampman mentioned the declining number of dog bites from 2011 to 1012 and the decrease of dog owners booked for violating leash laws.

Unfortunately, regardless of laws, many people become the victim of harmful dog bites every year. If you have suffered as a result of such an incident, call 877-PET-BITE today.
