Providing treatment when bitten by a dog

Posted on July 3rd, 2013 No Comments

When a person is bitten by a dog, the wound may be extremely serious, especially if the dog transmitted tetanus or rabies to the person. As such, providing immediate treatment to a victim of a dog bite is critical.

If bitten, it is best to get the victim away from the dog that bit him or her as soon as possible. After that, a person should make sure the wound is clean in order to prevent infection. Bleeding should also be controlled by applying pressure on the wound using gauze. The wound should then be thoroughly cleaned with soap and warm water.

If possible, you should check with the dog owner to determine if the dog had up-t0-date rabies shots. Additionally, the victim should be taken to see a doctor for their injuries and the incident should be reported to the appropriate agency as soon as possible.

Dog bites are serious and may endanger an innocent person’s life. If you were bitten by a dog in Michigan due to the negligence of its owner, the lawyers of Ravid & Associates, P.C., might be able to help you obtain compensation. Call 877-PET-BITE to discuss your situation.
