Teenager charged in dog fighting ring

Posted on April 24th, 2012 No Comments

The Genesee County prosecutor’s office announced earlier this week that the 14 year-old suspected of being the ring leader of a dog fighting operation has officially been charged with animal cruelty and dog fighting, both felonies that each carry a four-year prison sentence.

Prosecutors plan on charging the teenager as a juvenile. The dogs they rescued from his parent’s garage showed injuries from dog fighting as well as injuries that suggest the animals were tortured. Fractured ribs and broken legs that prevented two of the dogs from standing up appear to be signs that they were often kicked.

Torturing animals can come with fines up to $5,000 for one animal and $2,500 for each additional animal. Dog fighting can come with a $50,000 fine and 1,000 hours of community service along with a maximum four-year prison sentence.
