Ways to Prevent Dog Bites this Halloween

Posted on October 25th, 2012 No Comments

This Halloween, like all others, children and parents will be taking to the streets to go door-to-door for candy and treats. While parading through neighborhoods in their costumes, many families choose to bring their dogs with them. However, with such a large number of people out,  it is important to make sure that both dogs and children are safe from any dog bite incidents.

Children dressed in costumes may frighten a dog and cause a negative reaction. In order to avoid any issues, there are few things that pet owners and parents can do.

For pet owners, it may be a good idea to keep dogs behind a closed door or in a crate that is not near the front door because of the influx of visitors that come to a home on this night.

It also may be helpful to play music or keep the television on so that the activity at the front of the house can be muted. For parents who are taking their children door-to-door for trick-0r-treating, it may be a good idea to avoid homes in which you can hear dogs barking or houses where are tied to the fence, especially if you have small children.

Also, when dressed in a costume, children should avoid approaching dogs even if they know the animal because a dog may not recognize the child. Finally, if a dog escapes from a home, stay still and wait for the owner to retrieve the dog before moving in another direction.
